One day trip Essaouira
Essaouira
Essaouira or Mogador (as the Europeans prefer to say) is a Moroccan city, it is a wonderful blend; a great location, a considerable history, a unique weather and a very accepting population.
The city was planned and built in the 18 century by the Moroccan Sultan Mohammed bin Abdallah.
The name "Essaouira" derives from the Arabic word as_Suwayra or the small fortress. The name is a diminutive of "Sūr", meaning "wall", the Sultan chose that name to the city, so that he can highlight the well-built ramparts and planned layouts of the city.
The city is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, exactly in the region of Marrakech-Safi. It is a port. It was built to adapt the needs of foreign merchants, and to serve as the closest harbor to the city of Marrakech. it continued to grow and at a certain time it was the most important commercial port and diplomatic Capital of the country. Historically, the Jews were 80% of the population of the city, as they were handling the trade with the Europeans, by the consent of the Sultan. The rest of the population were a blend of Berbers/Amazighs, Arabs and Sub-Saharan inhabitants.
There is still many synagogues in the old Medina; the ancient part of the city.
Which makes the city very diverse and very inclusive.
Essaouira is characterized by mild temperatures all year around, and the beaches are windy which makes it a suitable location for ocean sports. The city is also a wonderful spot for the seekers of quietude and tranquility. Beside that, their is a short distance between Essaouira and Marakech.
This is a brief overall site on the city of Essaouira. it is a prefect destination for a day trip from Marakech, or a few days rest in case you are interested in beach experience and quietude.
